Community Special Constables

Many residents have raised concerns over anti-social behaviour in the village and the need to do something. Your Parish Council has been researching options that would see an increase in the visible policing in the village.

Essex Police are promoting the appointment of Community Special Constables part-funded by Parish Councils, prioritising their deployment in the sponsoring village.

What is a Community Special Constable? A ‘Special’ is an adult volunteer that commits to a minimum of 16 hours per month to patrol in uniform as a fully warranted Police Officer. They have the same powers as a regular Police Officer and can uphold and enforce the law.

How do you become a Community Special Constable? Anyone 18 years of age or older can volunteer (with a few exceptions where conflicts of interest may arise); full training and uniform is provided by Essex Police. The training programme requires a commitment of twenty full days that can be completed in as little as four weeks or over a longer 20-week course. With further on the job training, it can take a total of up to 18 months for a ‘Special’ to be fully qualified and able to patrol solo.
