The best walks in Essex
Everyone has their favourite local walks, but these circular routes have all been chosen for features in the landscape which come alive, whether that be Spring, Summer, Autumn or Winter. Covering woodlands carpeted with bluebells, wildflower meadows, arable farm land or picturesque walks along along river valleys. Little Baddow is a mecca for walkers.
Admiral McHardy Way
The Admiral McHardy Way is a 16.3km (10m) circular walk.
Start A: The Generals Arms, North hill, Little Baddow
Start b: Paper Mill Lock, Little Baddow
Admiral McHardy was the first Chief Constable of Essex in the year 1840. The walk was dedicated to the founding father of the Essex Police to commemorate the 150 years of the force. There are waymarks, and the route is shown on the Little Baddow Footpaths Map.

Millennium Walk
A circular walk of approx 11.1k (6.9 miles).
Start A: The Memorial Hall, Little Baddow
Start B: St Mary’s Church, Little Baddow
Little Baddow Millennium Walk includes the beautiful woodland of Blakes and Holybred, Waterhall Meadows and views of the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation.
There are waymarks, and the route is shown on the Little Baddow Footpaths Map.

Chelmer & Blackwater Navigation
Meandering for 14 miles, and climbing 77′ via 11 locks through the unexpectedly green and tranquil heart of Essex is a unique and pastoral waterway, the Chelmer & Blackwater Navigation. Part river, part canal, it was engineered by the great John Rennie and is still operated by its original Company of Proprietors.
