The Charity Commission has agreed on 21.11.24 to rename the charity which manages the almshouses at Mount Pleasant in North Hill. The charity will now be called Little Baddow Almshouses (239382).
The Charity Commission has also allowed more flexibility in the appointment of beneficiaries to the almshouses. Therefore new appointments will be made on the basis of only “preferably” living in Little Baddow at the time of appointment, and otherwise the Trustees can now more easily use their discretion on the significance of the connection to Little Baddow.

The Charity Commission has also formally supported the extended use of the grants from the Trustees’ second charity called Copyhold Allotments (246099). These now provide support for those in our village who are finding life difficult or who are caring for those in such situations. Such support is organized by a third party at arms-length from the Trustees.

For those interested in our village’s history, the extraordinary name of this second charity refers to its ownership of Smaller Poors Piece woodland, Fir Tree Lane. Allotted permission for villagers entitled to collect firewood in that woodland from 1813 was Copied into the manorial roll – hence the Copyhold Allotment name.
